When it comes to buying great coffee beans, many of us Aussies are making the same mistake — and that’s exactly what Kitchen Nine explored in a recent article featuring Bean & Barrel. Their co-founder Ian White shared insights that are not only useful for coffee lovers, but also spotlight how Bean & Barrel is carving out its place in Australia’s thriving specialty coffee scene. The Common Mistake: Looking at the Wrong Date
According to Ian, the biggest slip-up most people make when purchasing coffee beans is focusing on the “used by” date instead of the roast date — the real indicator of freshness and flavour. Coffee is at its best within weeks of roasting, and understanding that makes all the difference in the cup you brew at home. (Kitchen Nine)
From Passion Project to Coffee Brand
Ian’s journey with Bean & Barrel began far from a café — it started with a personal love of excellent coffee shared with his dad and a hobby tinkering with espresso machines. After years refurbishing premium machines to make them more accessible, he realised many people were asking the same question: Where do you get great beans from? (Kitchen Nine)
That’s when the idea for Bean & Barrel was born.
Instead of immediately roasting beans himself, Ian teamed up with industry veteran Gina DeBrita to create custom-crafted blends designed to deliver exceptional flavour and consistency. (Kitchen Nine)
Coffee With Character: The Bean & Barrel Blends
The brand launched with three distinctive blends, each built around specific flavour profiles and drinking styles:
-
Juniper: A full-bodied, everyday blend that’s quickly become a favourite among customers. (Kitchen Nine)
-
Negroni: A bold and strong option for those who like intensity. (Kitchen Nine)
-
Sherry (Signature Blend): Inspired by Ian’s own taste preferences, this was the original blend that set the tone. (Kitchen Nine)
Customers love being able to try all three — which is why multi-packs are among the most popular first purchases. They can choose whole beans or a range of grind types, including Espresso, Filter, Pour Over, Stove Top and AeroPress — ensuring a great brew no matter how you like to make coffee. (Kitchen Nine)
Not Just Great Coffee — Smart, Sustainable Thinking
While Ian admits he’s not a fan of coffee pods due to concerns about freshness and packaging, Bean & Barrel is actively exploring sustainable alternatives for people who want pod-like convenience without the downsides. (Kitchen Nine)
It’s clear Bean & Barrel isn’t just selling coffee — it’s helping Australians think differently about how they buy and enjoy it.
